The Better Business Bureau is advising us to be “cooperative, but cautious” when we are contacted by a Census worker.  The first phase of the 2010 Census has begun and legitimate workers are verifying addresses, counting household members and gathering some data on each person.  When we are contacted, we need to first verify that he/she is actually with the U.S. Census, as there are con artists out as well. U.S. Census workers will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and badge before answering any questions.

Some other cautions and considerations:

·     You should never invite anyone you do not know into your home!

·     Do not share your social security number, credit card or banking information with anyone.

·     You do not have to share any financial information.

·     Census workers should not be asking for any donations.

·     The Census Bureau is not working with any other groups.

·     In the future, you may be contacted by telephone, mail, or again at home.

·     The Census Bureau will not be contacting anyone via e-mail.  Never click on a link or open any attachments in an e-mail that is supposedly from the U.S. Census.
